Helping NYC Youth Stay In Sports
Youth sports participation across the United States has been declining for years and New York City is no exception. The reasons are complex, but one of the most overlooked drivers is simple: no coach, no game. No referee, no game.
The Aspen Institute's Project Play reports that organized team sport participation has fallen sharply since the early 2010s, hitting urban communities especially hard. At the same time, the official shortage has reached crisis levels. The National Association of Sports Officials estimates that hundreds of thousands of refs leave the profession each year, burned out and without support.
